I need to forget. I need an escape. Only one person isn't falling for my reputation as the NHL's Golden Boy; she captured my attention the minute she called me out for snooping through my best friend's house. She didn't want to hear my reason — she only wanted to playfully give me a hard time. Adalyn is bold, sassy— and the perfect escape. She's everywhere. In town and in my dreams, and suddenly I need to spend every waking moment with her. And I do, making this summer the best off-season I've ever had. But in the midst of getting lost in Adalyn, what I don't expect is to get her pregnant. And what I definitely don't expect is having to fight for her affection.
Hayden is a Rookie NHL player who became a star. He can have a bit of a temper on the ice, but tries to keep it in check because of the lessons his father taught him. Hayden isn't the typical party all the time, womanizing sports star you typically see. He was raised by great parents who were very active in his life. He is close to his parents and twin brother. After losing a game he goes to visit his best friend Racer in an attempt to both relax and avoid dealing with disappointment from his parents. There he meets Adalyn. Hayden knows there is something different about her from the beginning and does everything in his power to get to know her better. He realizes pretty quickly he wants more than just a fling with her. Racer tells him to stay away, but Hayden cannot resist the pull.
Adalyn is strong and independent. She is a nurse at a local hospital and met Racer via one of her best friends Emma. Adalyn has several brothers, which made it difficult for her to date throughout high school. When she meets Logan in college the become close friends, even though she secretly harbored a crush. Logan is the first man to break her heart, but she forgives him and they remain friends. When she first meets Hayden, Adalyn is drawn to him. Even with Racer telling her to stay away because although Hayden is a good guy, he travels a lot for hockey and Racer does not want to see Adalyn heartbroken again. Even with that warning Adalyn cannot resist their connection.
This was a well written book that managed to keep my interest the whole time. I really liked Hayden. He was a really great guy who wanted to make sure all those close to him were happy and taken care of. The way he went in search for Adalyn and the things he did to get her attention and to show her that her cared were swoon worthy. For me my least favorite character was Adalyn. She had feelings for Hayden and really wanted to be with him, but let others opinions magnify her own insecurities. The fact she initially kept secrets from him was frustrating to me. Even with that Hayden still forgave her and did everything he could to be closer to her and eventually win her back. The whole situation with Logan also made her lose points in my opinion. For some reason I was not convinced she was that naive.
Overall the story was pretty good and even with my reservations regarding characters, the author kept me wanting more. I would recommend this book.
